Conserve Water

Please be aware! A small drip or a leaking toilet can cause a very high water/sewer bill. Each meter is equipped with a small red leak detector dial. If after you determine there is no water use, you see this dial spinning, you have a leak somewhere in your home or business. Have it repaired immediately. Here are some ideas to help you out.

The New Britain water department's distribution system is divided into three service areas or pressure zones. One zone, our low pressure zone, is gravity fed from our filtration plant. This area is comprised of the southeast, southwest, and northeast sections of the city. There is a 3.5 million gallon storage tank for this low service area located on Elam Street.

The northwest section of the city is serviced through a high pressure zone. This area has water taken from the low service area pipe and pumped through a 4 million gallon a day Corbin Ave. pump station. Another pump station, the Broad Street pump station, can deliver another two million gallons a day from low service to this area. There is a 1.4 million gallon standpipe for this area located on Elam Street. Between the two storage tanks, there is a small Elam Street pump station which can take water from the low service storage tank and pump it into the high service standpipe, or directly into the high service area whenever the need arises.

There is a smaller high service zone located at the top of Steele Street. This area is serviced by our Steele Street pumping station, a 1.5 million gallon a day pump station. There is a small 1000 gallon storage tank located behind the station for this small service area.

The transmission & distribution system has over 200 miles of pipe; 2,000+ fire hydrants, & over 17,000 water meters, all maintained by a workforce of twenty dedicated employees.
