Pavement Management Program

New Britain's over 165 miles of City streets are one of the City's most important and most valuable assets, and maintaining these streets is one of the Public Works Department's most important responsibilities.  New Britain Public Works manages the condition of the city streets by following a comprehensive Pavement Management Program approach.  Programs such as the Annual Paving Program, Trench Repair Program, and Crack Sealing Program are part of this approach, and we are always looking for ways to improve our operations.  This web page provides detailed information about the current year’s programs as well as other related information.

The City of New Britain historically bonded for paving work, but the FY 22-23 budget included an initiative that will ensure 1%, or $2.3 million of the City’s budget is guaranteed to go towards fixing and maintaining roads. This is a much more sustainable and fiscally responsible policy.

2023 Annual Paving Program

Mayor Erin Stewart and the New Britain Public Works Department announce the start of the 2023 Pavement Rehabilitation Program.   This work will be performed by contractors retained by the City and is scheduled to begin June 20th and is expected to last approximately six weeks.  For the majority of streets the rehabilitation work involves milling off the top 2” of existing pavement and then installing 2” of new pavement.
