Mayor Recommends Selection for New Fire Chief

Candidate Would be First Hispanic Fire Chief in Department’s History

NEW BRITAIN—Mayor Erin Stewart announced today that she has selected New Britain resident Raul Ortizto fill the open position of Fire Chief for the New Britain Fire Department.

“Raul comes to us with 19 years in fire service and emergency management,” said Mayor Erin Stewart. “He hasa wealth of experience and a passion to continue learning so that our firefighters are well protected and ourcommunity is kept safe. Raul brings a set of specific skills that will lend himself well to the New Britain FireDepartment. We offer him a warm welcome and know he will serve our community—and his community—withpride and professionalism.”

Ortiz is currently employed as Deputy Chief (December 2017 to present) for the Hartford Fire Department,where he has also served as the Public Information Officer and Executive Officer (2014 to present.) Ortizstarted as a firefighter in the City of Hartford in 1999 and served as lieutenant from 2010 to 2016.

Ortiz received an American history degree from Central Connecticut State University in 1999 and is currentlypursuing a master’s degree in emergency management at the University of New Haven. He currently lives inNew Britain with his wife Miriam and children.

Ortiz was selected after a nationwide search. A panel of fire officials participated in the interview process; theMayor interviewed four finalists on March 19.

Under New Britain City Charter, all department heads are appointed by and subject to the authority of theMayor, following the consent of the Common Council. Ortiz’s appointment will go to the Common Council onWednesday, April 11. His first day is scheduled for Monday, April 16. The Mayor will join Chief Ortiz and Firepersonnel for a brief welcoming ceremony that morning; more details to come.

The public is invited to meet Chief Ortiz on Monday, April 16 at New Britain High School’s lecture hall for apublic meet and greet with City residents from 5 to 7 p.m.
