City of New Britain Seeking Next Poet Laureate

NEW BRITAIN— Mayor Erin Stewart and the New Britain Commission on the Arts are seeking individualsinterested in being the City’s next honorary Poet Laureate.

In this position, the Poet Laureate will act as the City’s ambassador of the arts and literary community. ThePoet Laureate must be at least 18 years old, a resident of New Britain and remain a resident for the duration ofhis or her appointment, and have a strong desire to be actively engaged in the community by performing his orher work with the public.

“New Britain has a rich arts community and the Poet Laureate is another way of spreading this talent to abroader audience,” said Mayor Stewart. “We look forward to celebrating the creativity and talents of our nextPoet Laureate!”

To be considered for the position, applicants must provide a resume or CV, a selection of examples of workspublished in print or online, an expression of intent including specific availability for fulfilling the role, andcontact information for three personal references. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Feb. 25. Materials shouldbe sent to or brought to room 204.

The New Britain Commission on the Arts will review all the nominations and interview the most promisingcandidates. The interviews will include a reading/performance of the nominee’s poetry and their articulation oftheir vision for the position. It is expected that Mayor Stewart and the Arts Commission will appoint a PoetLaureate by April 2018.

The City’s First Poet Laureate, Michael “The Chief” Peterson—a Dean of Students at New Britain HighSchool—was appointed in the fall of 2015. His term recently came to an end.

“Having a Poet Laureate for New Britain has been a remarkable experience,” said New Britain ArtsCommission Chairman Stephen Hard. “Michael ‘The Chief’ Peterson has done an outstanding job representingour City as our first laureate. He has set the bar high.”
