Conservation Commission

The Conservation Commission was established per Charter 97, Section 7-131a, of the Connecticut General Statutes for the development, conservation, supervision and regulation of natural resources, including water resources, within its territorial limits. The Commission consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor pursuant to Section 19-34 of the City Code of Ordinances.

The Conservation Commission is empowered to act as the Inland Wetlands Agency of the City and is given the responsibility of performing the duties and functions provided for in Sections 22a-36 through 22a-45 of the Connecticut General Statutes, as amended.

Per Sections 22a-354 et seq. of the Connecticut General Statutes, the Conservation Commission is also designated as the Aquifer Protection Agency (APA). The Aquifer Protection Area Regulations provide protection for the public water supply by regulating certain activities such as the use, storage, and/or handling of hazardous materials that potentially threaten groundwater to minimize contamination.

The Conservation Commission meets at 6:30pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in City Hall Room  202. The Aquifer Protection Agency convenes right after the Conservation Commission meeting.
