New Britain Persons with Disabilities Services
"Serving and Empowering All Persons with Disabilities"

Under the policies set forth by the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, this component of the Community Services Division provides Disability Services to an estimated 15,000 people with disabilities in the City of New Britain. These services include but are not limited to:

  • Transportation (Evenings and Weekends), please call at least 24 hours in advance
  • Case management
  • Client Advocacy
  • Referral to other disability related programs
  • Americans with Disabilities Act assistance and compliance
  • Curb ramp funding and site recommendation for construction
  • Community Inclusion Advocacy
  • Handicap Parking Compliance assistance

The Disabilities Services component also assists the Commission on Persons with Disabilities with its Annual Employment of Persons with Disabilities Awards Breakfast and the Annual Americans with Disabilities Act Celebration. These two events celebrate people with disabilities and the many accomplishments made through their efforts and the supportive legislation that empowers them.

The Commission on Persons with Disabilities Annual Awards Breakfast bestows honor upon:

  • A person with a disability who is employed and going above and beyond
  • An employer who employs people with disabilities with an attitude of inclusion and acceptance

The Commission's Annual ADA Celebration takes place in Walnut Hill Park each July and celebrates this landmark legislation that both protects and empowers people with disabilities. The ADA celebration is a fun time of music, a cake cutting ceremony, and Mayoral proclamation of ADA significance. Typically over 1,000 residents enjoy this event!
