Dog Obedience Class
Starts April 26th at AW
Stanley Park Swiss Chalet
New Britain Parks and
Recreation Department is working once again
with WTIC-AM 1080's host of "Pet Talk"
Laurie Fass on offering dog obedience
classes on Tuesday nights starting on April
26th. There will be two separate
classes offered. The first is a level
1 class from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM that teaches
basic obedience and manners including: heel,
sit, stay, come, boundary training, no
jumping, drop it, leave it and more.
The level 2 class runs from 7:30 PM - 8:30
PM and is for any dog completing a beginner
class or who has basic training.
Advantages to taking these classes include:
getting off leash reliability, advancing
basic commands like sit and down from a
distance, coming to heel position while
moving, etc. Sign up for class today!

around is a camp for children ages 3 - 6
that have NOT COMPLETED first grade.
The camp includes indoor and outdoor
creative play, fine and gross motor skills
development, games, arts and crafts, swim
time, and much more. Breakfast and

Red Cross Swim
Lessons
New Britain Parks and Recreation will be
offering Red Cross Certified swim lessons
this summer at both AW and Willow Brook
Pools. Swim lessons are offered for
children from six months to 15 years old.
Three sessions are are held as follows:
1st session - June 23rd - July 1st
2nd session - July 5th - July 15th
3rd session - July 18th - July 29th
Swim Lessons are $7.00 per person, per
two-week session.
Select the pool location, skill or age
appropriate course to determine desired

Join the Parks and
Recreation Leaders in Training Summer Camp
New Britain Parks and Recreation Department
is offering a Leaders In Training program
this summer for girls and boys, grade 6 (Completed)
to age 14. Leaders In Training (L.I.T.) is a
seven-week training experience that fosters
leadership development. Young leaders learn
and enhance sports and games training,
motivational skills, behavior modification,
teamwork, camp and aquatics regulations and
guidelines, character development, safety,
CPR and First- Aid training. The program
will run, Monday, June 27, 2011 through
Friday, August 5, 2011 (Except
Monday, July 4, 2011), from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and will be held at
A.W. Stanley Park. The fee for Leaders In
Training is $150.00 (Trips and T-shirt
included).
Candidates
undergo a screening process that will
consist of testing, oral and written
interviews, and two letters of
recommendation. The application process will
go as follows:
1.)
Two letters of recommendation from a
non-relative (i.e. teacher, coach)
2.)
Fill out registration form.
3.)
Submit payment,
registration form, and two letters of
recommendation to the New Britain Parks and
Recreation Department.
4.)
Applicants will
be contacted upon receipt of all completed
documentation.

from Yesterday’s Youth, to Today’s Team to
Tomorrow’s Leader!
The New Britain Parks and Recreation
Department accepts registrations on a
first-come-first-served basis.
Application forms are
available and registrations are accepted
8:15a.m. - 3:45 p.m., Monday-Friday, in the
Recreation Office located in Room 302 in
City Hall, 27 West Main Street.
Payment must accompany
registration.
Mail-in registrations are
also accepted on this basis.

Parks and Recreation Conference
New Britain’s own Willow Street Park won the
Connecticut Recreation and Parks
Association’s Facility of Merit Award, which
was presented at the organization’s 50th
annual state conference on November 23rd.

Join the Friends of Walnut
Hill Rose Garden
As a non-profit, volunteer
organization, The Friends of Walnut Hill Park Rose
Garden was started in the Spring of 2009 to restore and
maintain the Walnut Hill Park Rose Garden. Working
together with the New Britain Parks and Recreation
Department and coordinating volunteer efforts from local
residents, community organizations and the
University of Connecticut Master Gardener program,
our organization's mission is to connect and unite
residents through the therapeutic art and joy of
gardening at the Walnut Hill Park Rose Garden, restoring
and reviving vital urban green space in New Britain.
The Friends of the Walnut Hill
Park Rose Garden's efforts provide an opportunity for
intergenerational and cross-cultural connections and
develop a learning environment for children and adults.
We are working to strengthen the community and continue
the revitalization of Downtown New Britain bringing
visitors to town and prominence to our City, Walnut Hill
Park and the restored Rose Garden.
Parks & Rec offers IPod walking tour of Walnut Hill Park!
The Parks and
Recreation Department will be offering its first ever
walking tour of Walnut Hill Park. "A walk through Walnut
Hill Park," created by CCSU students Amy Kirby and Aileen
Bastos, is a fifteen minute video describing the history of
the Frederick Law Olmsted designed masterpiece. The tour
starts with the walking path on North Main Street, going up
to the World War I monument, then down to Ledgers Way and
around the one mile loop.

Piano and Voice Lessons
New Britain Parks and Recreation
Department is accepting registrations for the fall, winter,
and spring sessions for Piano and Voice Lessons. Lessons are
held in City Hall Room 210. Enrollment is limited. Fee of
$100 per person, per session must accompany registration. Click here for more info!
